Planning & Preparation

Tell someone where you're going, the trails you'll be taking and when you expect to return home.

Know your limitations.

Don't hike alone.

Pack the Essentials

Water

Cell phones.

First aid kit.

Food

Caloric intake is absolutely necessary when hiking. Even if you're hiking as a form of weight management if you attempt to complete hikes without consuming anything your body will enter a state of ketogenesis. This can cause you to become slow, cumbersome, unresponsive to external cues, off-balance and disoriented. Eat high calorie and salty foods, (or at least pack some in case of emergency).
